Farewell To Fleas

Article By Frances Gavin - Canine Natural Cures

Are you worried about the effects of chemicals on your dog? Why not make your own safe, non toxic flea repellents?

CITRUS REPELLENT: Cut a lemon into quarters and place in a pint jug. Cover the lemon with boiling water and let it steep overnight. Next day you have a flea repellent that you can use in a spray bottle. Spray all over your dog remembering especially behind the ears and around the head generally (careful of eyes), around the base of the tail (once again keep away from delicate bits) and under your dog's 'armpits'.

AROMATHERAPY REPELLENT: Using 10 ml. of sweet almond oil as your base, add 10 drops of lavender and 5 drops of cedarwood. Shake well and use 1 or 2 drops spread over the skin at least twice a week to keep the fleas away.

A flea collar can be made by rubbing a few drops of one of the following into an ordinary webbing or rope collar or even a doggy bandanna: eucalyptus oil, Tea Tree Oil, citronella, lavender or geranium. Don't forget to do this weekly.

YOUR HOME: Fleas spend most of their time in your furnishings and only hop onto your dog or you for their next meal. Make sure you wash your dog's bedding regularly because no flea ever survived a hot wash cycle. If you add eucalyptus oil to the final rinse it will also kill 99% of house dust mites according to research from the University of Sydney, Australia.

Vacuum your home very thoroughly and sprinkle a fine layer of ordinary table salt over your upholstery and carpets and leave overnight before vacuuming again to evict your unwelcome guests safely but don't forget to empty your vacuum bag.

BATHING: A badly infested dog really needs to be bathed so use your favorite dog shampoo. Rinse the dog off very thoroughly and in the final rinse add a couple of drops of Tea Tree Oil or Lavender oil. An alternative is to make your own herbal flea dip which will also work on ticks. Steep two cups of fresh rosemary in two pints of boiling water for 30 minutes. Strain the liquid, discard the leaves and make it up to one gallon ( 8 pints) with warm water. Pour this mixture over the dog until it's saturated. Do not rinse off and allow the dog to dry naturally so this is a remedy to use on hot summer days.

INTERNAL FLEA REPELLENTS: Garlic may not be your favorite cologne and it's not the flea's favorite smell either. When your dog eats garlic, the smell is excreted through the dog's skin making your dog less likely to be the flea's next meal. In case you think you might need to give your dog a breath freshener along with the garlic, my dogs, Mack and Josh, eat a garlic clove every day and I don't find their breath smells from it at all.

Brewer's yeast tablets will also help to make your dog less attractive to fleas because once again the smell is excreted through the skin.

Adding a dessertspoon of apple cider vinegar to the water bowl will make the skin more acidic and unpleasant to fleas and ticks. If your dogs don't fancy apple cider vinegar in the water bowl, dilute it 50/50 with water and use in a spray bottle instead of the citrus repellent.

Description
Love playing fetch or tug-of-war with your best friend, but hate touching your dog's slimy tennis ball? Hate having to try to pull the tennis ball out of your dog's mouth? Here's your solution! Sewn to be stretchy (see Reese in the 4th picture). Reese loves playing tug-o-war with a tennis ball...my friend Cheryl finally has an edge and no longer has to have her fingers inches away from being severed!

THESE ARE BY FAR MY BEST SELLING TOY!

This listing is for one dog toy with a tennis ball & squeaker.

To customize your dog's toy, please include the following information in the "note to seller" box once purchased:
1. Use the 3rd picture above to pick out your dog's favorite color.

*every purchase comes with a free gift!*

What makes my toys Earth-Friendly and Safer?
1. All my fabric (dog and cat toys) is washed with Seventh Generation Free & Clear detergent (which is NON-TOXIC, biodegradable, hypo-allergenic, free of phosphates & optical brighteners, NOT tested on animals & kosher-certified)
2. I do not use fabric softeners!
3. My dog toys are made with recycled tennis balls. One of my jobs is working part-time at a Racquet Club where tennis players throw out their tennis balls after only a few matches (something about losing their "bounce"?). Beautiful, clean, practically new tennis balls! Instead of the balls ending up in a landfill, I was able to enter into an agreement with the owner to recycle the balls so dogs could get as much enjoyment as possible out of them!
They may not be "blemish"-free...but you are doing your part for the planet!

ENIDTRAISMAN GLASS ART

Kiln-formed glass is my passion. It is a perfect compliment to my life and skills. I utilize my experiences from painting, sewing and ceramics. My deep connection with people and animals is my inspiration. I am the founder and director of The Pet Loss Support Program at DoveLewis Emergency Animal Hospital In Portland, Oregon. I celebrate the loving bond shared between people and their companion animals.
My raw glass comes from the Bullseye factory in Portland. The glass is purchased in sheets of varying colors and thickness, crushed and powdered (frit) and thin rods (stringers).
Each of my pieces is created by designing, cutting, layering and fusing many shapes and colors of glass in a special glass kiln. This process creates a depth of color and unique pieces of art that are unique and one-of-a-kind.
Glass has to be heated slowly in a special kiln which reaches 1465 degrees. Most of my pieces go though several cycles, as more layers and details are added. Each hand made glass item will be different, and certain inconsistencies or imperfections are part of the mystery and beauty of this process.
My designs are inspired by all critters in the animal kingdom, particularly companion animals for they enrich our lives daily with their buoyant spirits and unconditional love.
It is my pleasure to create commissioned pieces of beloved companion animals for the humans who love and cherish them...WWW.ENIDTRAISMAN.ETSY.COM

MAKE A DOG BED

Dog Bed

Your dog will love hanging out on this cool cushion.

YOU WILL NEED

  • Fleece fabric in two colors (available at fabric stores); the amount of fabric depends on the size of your dog
  • Ruler
  • Fabric scissors
  • Polyester pillow stuffing
  • Optional: other colors of fleece to decorate the pillow

HERE'S HOW

Determine the dimensions your pillow needs to be to fit your dog, then add eight inches (20 centimeters) to the length and width. (This gives you extra fabric for fringe.)
Measure two colors of fleece to this size and align both pieces. To create the fringe, cut strips four inches (10 centimeters) long by one inch (2.5 centimeters) wide along all four sides of both pieces of fleece.
Cut out the squares of fabric at the corners. (If you like, cut extra fabric into fun shapes and sew them onto the fleece that will form the pillow’s top.) Tightly knot the top strips to the bottom strips on three sides of the pillow.
Stuff the pillow filling into the open side until the pillow is firm. Then tie the last side

CAT GRASS ..MAKE YOUR OWN

Cat Grass

Your cat will love this green treat.

YOU WILL NEED

  • Small planter
  • Potting soil
  • Water
  • Packet of cat grass seeds (available at plant stores)

Fill the planter with soil. Add water until the soil is damp but not soaked. Sprinkle seeds across the top layer of soil, then press them into the soil. Wet the soil again. Keep the soil moist until the grass begins to sprout—about one to two weeks. Then water as needed. When your grass grows, invite your cat to this all-you-can-eat salad bar.

KITTY CONDO

Kitty Condo

Give your cat a cool place to hang out with this homemade kitty condo!

YOU WILL NEED

  • Sturdy cardboard boxes
  • Wide packing or duct tape
  • Wrapping paper

HERE'S HOW

Arrange the boxes in any configuration you like. Use the folding flaps as doors or trim. Tape the boxes in place.
Cover with colorful wrapping paper.

OCTOBER 4 BLESSING OF THE ANIMALS

pet blessings blessing of animalsSaint Francis of Assisi - lover of all creation

Blessing of Animals
by Kevin E. Mackin, O.F.M.

As autumn arrives, people in various places may notice something odd.

A procession of animals, everything from dogs and cats to hamsters and even horses, is led to churches for a special ceremony called the Blessing of Pets.

This custom is conducted in remembrance of St. Francis of Assisi’s love for all creatures.

feast of Saint Francis Francis, whose feast day is October 4th, loved the larks flying about his hilltop town. He and his early brothers, staying in a small hovel, allowed themselves to be displaced by a donkey.

Francis wrote a Canticle of the Creatures, an ode to God’s living things. “All praise to you, Oh Lord, for all these brother and sister creatures.” And there was testimony in the cause for St. Clare of Assisi’s canonization that referred to her little cat!

That there are today over 62 million cats in the U.S. attests to the continuing affection we have for our furry, feathered or finned friends. We've even had a cat called Socks in the White House. Other popular presidential pets range from Abraham Lincoln’s Fido to Lyndon Johnson’s beagles, named Him and Her.

For single householders, a pet can be a true companion. Many people arrive home from work to find a furry friend overjoyed at their return. Many a senior has a lap filled with a purring fellow creature.

The bond between person and pet is like no other relationship, because the communication between fellow creatures is at its most basic. Eye-to-eye, a man and his dog, or a woman and her cat, are two creatures of love.

No wonder people enjoy the opportunity to take their animal companions to church for a special blessing. Church is the place where the bond of creation is celebrated.

At Franciscan churches, a friar with brown robe and white cord often welcomes each animal with a special prayer. The Blessing of Pets usually goes like this:

“Blessed are you, Lord God, maker of all living creatures. You called forth fish in the sea, birds in the air and animals on the land. You inspired St. Francis to call all of them his brothers and sisters. We ask you to bless this pet. By the power of your love, enable it to live according to your plan. May we always praise you for all your beauty in creation. Blessed are you, Lord our God, in all your creatures! Amen.”

PuppyBack to School Days

Springtime brings great momentum to our lives, but Autumn has its own energy that pulls us forward with change. Our shared lives with our dogs are often affected when September rolls around.

Our children go back to school, and for some families, this means our dog may be home alone again, or possibly alone for the first time.
Separation anxiety and boredom
can stress our dogs and lead some dogs into destructive behaviors. We’ve got some suggestions for keeping your dog coping well in the empty house. See below to learn more on dealing with separation anxiety.

For many of us, September’s school bells bring us more time for ourselves, and often more time to spend with our dog now that our kids are back into their homework and activities. Fall can be the perfect time to
train your dog and help break bad habits that you both may have fallen into during the busy summer months. Read on for some training suggestions to help break bad habits.

And some of us just feel nostalgic for our school days at this time of year, remembering the excitement of learning. If this is true for you, now could be the perfect time to
brush up on natural pet care topics and start that new holistic remedy or new food you’ve been wanting to try for your dog. Check out our articles on the fundamentals of holistic pet care. See below what topics are on our A-list for Natural Pet Care 101.

Whatever you’re up to this Autumn, as always, we wish you and your dogs the best of health!

Home Alone... Is your dog feeling bored, anxious or lonely?

We know that the canine-human bond is strong, and it's common for our dogs to miss us when we leave home. But some dogs can become extremely anxious when their owners are away, which can adversely affect their health and test the limits of our patience. Dogs that have separation anxiety may exhibit symptoms like: lethargy, depression, self-injurious licking or self-biting, destructive chewing or scratching, and urinating inappropriately. Some key steps to take for dogs that are anxious when alone are:

  • Provide stimulating distractions/entertainment. Many dogs enjoy gazing out the window, and if your dog doesn't have a barking problem, be sure to give them access to a window. Some excellent DVDs and music CDs are available to entertain your dog. There are also many toys that can be safely left for your dog to enjoy while you are out, including clever food dispensing toys like the Buster food cube and Kong stuffable toys that can keep your dog busy for long periods of time.

  • For dogs with extreme anxiety, consider the KongTime Automatic Kong Toy Dispenser, which drops a new treat-filled Kong at set intervals while you are away.

  • Be sure that you spend quality time with your dog at regular times each day. A short walk around the block for dogs, or even five minutes of play time with a favorite toy or game before you leave can provide your dog with a great deal of satisfaction that endures after you’ve gone. Longer play and exercise time adds benefits - a tired dog is a happy dog.

  • Don't make a big deal out of leaving and keep the "getting ready to leave" process short by being prepared to depart in advance (e.g., have car keys by the door). The longer the departure process is, the more time your dog has to get increasingly anxious.

  • Consider whether your dog might benefit from a natural remedy for anxiety. There are many herbal, homeopathic, and flower essence remedies available that can work wonders in safely reducing your dog’s stress.

  • Provide companionship – get another pet, or have a neighbor or pet sitter come by for a short visit while you’re gone to give your dog a quick walk or at least some company. At the very least, leave the TV or radio on and tuned to a station with friendly voices talking and/or soothing music.

The Holistic Approach to Training

As with all other areas of pet care, we advocate the holistic approach to training pets. Holistic training involves:

  • Use of positive reinforcement, and no physical punishments like hitting

  • Considering problem behaviors in context – trying to understand and address the root cause of the problem and not just attacking the symptom (i.e., the problem behavior)

  • Understanding that training is a two-way street, and knowing that we must give our dogs what they need to motivate them to learn

  • Remembering that our human-dog bond is the most important thing and keeping our training goals second to our first goal of honoring our relationship with our dogs.

Here are some suggestions for training your dog:

Have a positive goal in mind – something you want your pet to do, not what you don’t want. For example, if your dog is jumping up, focus on the positive objective - you want the dog to stand (or sit) when greeting people. It may sound silly, but keep picturing the target positive activity and don't fixate your mind on the negative. Dogs are very intuitive and can often pick up on your thoughts, so keep them positive with the focus on what you do want.

When possible, use baby step goals to shape the behavior you want. Reward your dog when their behavior is in the right direction, and gradually step up the target to get it closer to your desired end goal. For example, if you want your dog to stay on command, give a treat when he or she lies down. Next time, have the dog hold "stay" with you standing near for 30 seconds before giving the treat, and slowly increase the amount of time in "stay" and the distance you move away from the dog before giving the treat.

Think about the context of your dog’s behavior. Is it something new? If so, when did it start? Are there any events or changes that could be at the root of the problem? Always consider whether the undesirable behavior may be caused by a health problem. When dogs are in pain, it is very common for them to “act out.” An all-too-common scenario is the dog that is urinating in the house due to a bladder or urinary tract infection. If you suspect your dog may be unwell, consult with your vet.

Know what motivates your dog and use this knowledge to plan your training. If your dog is food motivated, give tasty training treats when the desired behavior is performed. Some dogs prefer play time or access to favorite toys over food treats, so keep this in mind.

Keep training sessions short and try to end on a positive note. Remember that your overall goal is to make your relationship with your dog even better. If training time is no fun, you are unlikely to succeed. Dogs that are happy and that trust their owners will be more motivated to learn and to want to please you.

Below are some training tools to help you work with your dog. For additional advice on training dogs, we recommend the books, "Don't Shoot the Dog," and "The Other End of the Leash."
